Fun Cockroach Facts !

Cockroaches are cannibals

When a infestation of cockroaches becomes a massive size food begins to become scarce. To fix this problem and lower the colony size they will begin to eat each other.

Cockroaches are old
The average life span of a Cockroach is about a year. At Penn State University a professor explains that fossil evidence shows that cockroaches have been around for over 300 million years! Even dinosaurs and cavemen had to live with cockroach infestations in their homes!

Cockroaches VS. Nuclear Explosion

The theory of cockroaches being able to survive a nuclear explosion is just a myth. The myth came after the events in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 where cockroaches were the only survivors.  As seen during testing, cockroaches can’t actually survive a nuclear explosion as none of the crawling insects survived radiation levels of 100,000 rads (1). Even though they can't survive it, they can endure a lot more radiation than humans.

Cockroaches can squeeze into tiny holes
Did you know that cockroaches can squeeze in to a whole as small as a quarter ? How do they do that you might ask ? They have a flexible exoskeleton that allows them to flatten their body and splay their legs to the side. This makes them the perfect fit.
Cockroaches can survive a week without a head

Unlike humans, cockroaches don’t need their mouths to breathe. Instead, they use spiracles (tiny hole) in their body to inhale and transport oxygen. Combine this with the ability to survive without food for a month and you have an insect that can last without it’s head for a week!
